Henry Purcell (10th September 1659 – 21st November 1695), a baroque classical composer, is generally considered to be one of England’s greatest composers — indeed, he has often been called England’s finest native composer. Purcell incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements but devised a peculiarly English style of Baroque music.

They're not idiots. The word has two different meanings. In one sense, "classical" music is erudite European music composed roughly between 1750-1815. In another sense, all erudite European music - or anything within that tradition - is "classical" music. In the first sense, Purcell is not "classical", but baroque. In the second sense, he most certainly is "classical." Now take your smug arrogance and choke on it.

Purcell's King Arthur and Dido & Aeneas are beautiful works. Our choir performed them this spring, and it was a wonderful experience to get to sing them to the audience.
