Henry Cow and Slapp Happy effectively merged for two albums: ‘Desperate Straights’ (dominated by Slapp Happy) and ‘In Praise of Learning’ (dominated by Henry Cow). In 1975, the bands demerged again with Henry Cow keeping Dagmar. It is slightly erroneous to treat Henry Cow & Slapp Happy as a distinct band as such, the merger was more of a creative endeavour that reached its true synthesis with Art Bears. However, tensions in Henry Cow appeared to the extent that the first Art Bears album ‘Hopes and Fears’ was originally ear-marked as a Henry Cow album. Tim Hodgkinson’s dismay at this outcome is recorded in the booklet that accompanies the 40th Anniversary Boxset.
