The band is comprised of two brothers, Toby and Finn Kidd on drums (the latter was featured on Klaxons original recordings) and bassist David Javu. I got on the phone with guitarist/frontman Toby Kidd to talk about their feisty, jangly tunes, and other such grand topics. On record and in appearance, Hatcham Social are the archetypal twee 1980s-worshipping indie band: all patterned jumpers, jangly guitar melodies and sway-along drums. But the honeyed sound of their four singles, and the sight of Finn Kidd at the start of this show, crouched behind his drumkit chewing his nails, is no preparation for the exhilarating ferocity of their 10-song, 30-minute set. If Toby Kidd's guitar jangles, it is with the shivering clash and clang of metal objects rattling together. David Fineberg's bass is more tuneful but no less aggressive, the notes skittering around Finn's pummelled drums as though the two were engaged in a bout of bare-knuckle boxing.
