Biography
A legend of jazz who passed away in 1999, “Sweets” Edison was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1915, and began playing the trumpet at age 12. In the early 1930s, he started to work with “territory” bands from Cleveland to St. Louis, and from the late 30s on to 1950 he played with Count Basie almost continuously. Edison single-handedly developed a vocabulary for the Harmon-muted trumpet.
Along with Bobby Hackett, he was one of the few master trumpet accompanists of the era, and found himself in demand for countless recording sessions with singers Frank Sinatra, Pearl Bailey, and many more. By late 1958, he was recording regularly as a soloist and working with his group at New York’s Birdland. He visited The Landing in San Antonio and appeared with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band on Riverwalk Jazz in 1994.
