I had the opportunity to hear Hannu Ala in a free performance at a church here in Jyväskylä. He played a couple of hymn arrangements, some classical works, one of his own works, some ragtime and even Mary Had A Little Lamb (but not as you've ever heard it). I wept at the beauty of his artistry. He denied being a composer, but called himself a scribe, writing down the music that God composed in his head. He gives God the glory for his talent. I once thought that Jean Sibelius was one of a kind. Now, I think that his spirit may still be in Finland.
