Biography

Han-Shan were a short-lived band from Arroyo Grande,CA, active in the early 1990’s. First vocalist was chris pontius from jackass and wildboyz.

Correction: Han Shan was based on the central coast of CA, Arroyo Grande to be specific. The Han Shan 7” was recorded in San Diego.

They started as a / band, because of the singer, whose voice reminds of early Dystopia (he didn’t appear on the recording of the 7”).

This line-up released a demo cassette and contributed 4 songs on a compilation 12” released on Reality Control? in 1993, entitled Reality Control? Compilation.

Addendum: The singer for the Reality Control? Comp was Chris Pontias of Jack Ass.

In late 1993, their singer went awol and Cory Linstrum (of End of the Line/John Henry West filled in on vocals for a Gilman St. show they came up for. He wasn’t doing any bands (End of the Line was way long gone and John Henry West had recently broke up) so they asked him to record the 7” with them.

The 7” was recorded by Matt from Gravity Records in just a couple hours in a garage, hence the sound quality is mediocre.
It was released in early 1994 on Soledad Records from Olympia (Soledad #002).

A few weeks later they did a gig opening for Karp in Santa Cruz, and broke up shortly after.

Some members went on to play in Astral, Drunk Horse, Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live, Tight Bros From Way Back When, while Cory started Dragon Rojo, then salem lights.
