Hammock is the / project of composers Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson. They debuted Hammock in early 2005 with the full length album Kenotic.

Since their debut, Hammock released an EP in mid-2005 called Stranded Under Endless Sky, and The Sleepover Series, Vol. 1 (Remastered) six months later in early 2006. In November 2006, Hammock released the full-length follow up to “Kenotic”, Raising Your Voice…Trying to Stop an Echo. In Fall of 2007, Hammock was invited by Jonsi Birgisson (Sigur Ros) and Alex Somers (Parachutes) to perform at the overseas debut art exhibition of Riceboy Sleeps (now Jonsi & Alex). Hammock released Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow in May 2008, which was the “studio performance” recording of the music that Byrd and Thompson wrote for that performance, their first-ever live show.

Chasing After Shadows…Living with the Ghosts followed in May 2010. The first video from the album, ”Breathturn” by David Altobelli was released in late March, and the first song from the album, “You Lost the Starlight in Your Eyes” was launched in April via a free download on the band’s site. On December 14, 2010, the band released exclusively through its own website the EP Longest Year, a beat-less and wordless “mini-album” whose title referenced the duo’s difficult 2010, which included the near-destruction of Byrd’s home by an epic 100-year flood in Nashville.

A majority of Hammock’s music is ambient instrumental, save for a few tracks that feature haunting ethereal vocals. Hammock is all about the guitars—the band’s sound is “sleepier” than the brash, often obvious crescendos of their er cousins, reminiscent of 80’s Brian Eno and early 90’s Nick McCabe of the band The Verve.
