Family Man (3:25)

Cover of Ultimate Daryl Hall + John Oates

From Ultimate Daryl Hall + John Oates and 10 other releases

Taken from the album H20, this track is a cover of a song originally written and recorded by Mike Oldfield from his album Five Miles Out(Although it was sung by vocalist defacto, Maggie Reilly) The song is aledgedly about a man being propositioned by a prostitute. According to an interview in 1998, Oldfield wrote all of the music for the chorus, and verses were written by the other writers. Tim Cross has also claimed to have written the majority of the lyrics for the song, and cited Rick Fenn as the inspiration of the ‘family man’ mentioned in the song.

The Hall and Oates version has a slightly more rockier and edgy feel. Intrestingly, Hall & Oates version of the song charted much higher in both the US & UK charts reaching n#6 in the US billboard top 100 and n# 15 in the UK singles chart (Oldfields version charted n# 45 in the UK singles and failed to chart in the US although it did reach n# 29 in the Canadian Hot 100!)

You people know that the original is this one, don't you? They composed this song, as happened with the Paul Young "Everytime you go away". Now, I prefer the Oldfield's version too, harsher, better produced and just refined enough.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why these guys, the most successful duo in rock history, are NOT in the R 'n' R Hall of Fame?? Just another reason why that Hall is a joke!

I don't know, I'm a fan of the Hall & Oates sound. I like their cover, but the original has good parts. One thing's for sure though - the original is _not_ "far better". They are quite similar. If anything, the cover is more refined.
