Biography

Gymnastics or (later) Laka Gimnastika is originally from a small town of Ruma, in Srem region, province of Vojvodina, Serbia. Ruma, although a small town with about 30.000 inhabitants, was always a place with a strong underground scene that has it roots in the music and visual arts groups that existed in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

During the 1990’s there were numerous active indie and punk bands in Ruma, with quite a strong scene with regular concerts, several zines, radio shows, etc. Still, in that period the average salary was between 20 and 50 Euro per month, so it was extremely difficult to maintain a band, buy equipment or even pay a train ticket to a town to which you were invited to play. The wars were still going on, all communication between Serbia and the rest of the world was cut down, and founding a punk band was actually just a kind of anger-relief therapy for most of us.

Tha band was founded in 1994 and inherited the distorted bass-drums-vocal structure from one of the Stevan’s (lead singer) previous bands called Chaotic Ping Pong. We started practicing a lot, and in several months we asked all of our friends to give us a little bit of money to record a decent demo. About 30 people gave us 3 US$ each, and the rest of the money we got by selling hats made by Stevan’s mother. In 1995 we have recorded our first album called “It Is!” for about 150 US$, and were quite lucky that the “Silver Cross Records” and independent label from Belgrade liked the demo and decided to publish it, because in other case that demo would never go out of Ruma.
