Thelonious Monk compared to Mahler. The two names mentioned in the same sentence. Now THERE is a first. I must get my head around this one and contemplate the profundities at some length. Good one handdrummer, I like your thought process'

one of the things I love about Mahler is, like thelonious monk, he doesn't go where you may think he's going.

I don't feel sad at all when listening to this piece. It sounds much more like a person who's having an epiphanic moment, an insight, or simply, a mere daydream. :) P.s. So glad I've found this.

"Life is full of misery, loneliness and suffering and it's all over much too soon." That was said by Woody Allen and it is obviously expressed by Gustav Mahler in this symphony. This is sentimental, sad, empathetic, passionate, romantic and evocative.

Mahler was a great composer. It's sad how tragic parts of his life were, including the time during which he composed this piece. Beautiful as it is, it makes me very empathetic to him.

Hearing Von Karajan do the 5th is very special. Of Mahler and Beethoven for that matter.

Mahler wrote this at such a tragic time in his life. You can hear the pain and suffering in the music.
