Symphony No. 1 in D major, "Titan": III. Feierlich und gemessen, ohne zu schleppen (10:08)

An interesting treatment of wildly disparate musical elements - but done so well that it borders on magic!

First we have a macabre presentation of the famous French folk song Frere Jacque - but presented in the minor mode and with some variation to the tune… followed by a section that reminds the listener of Mahler’s Jewish roots… and then a very tender section that is very direct in its emotional appeal…

Mahler finally returns us to the opening theme with reminders of the second section to complete this most ingenious and completely satisfying movement.

The orchestration is vintage Mahler… specially with the exquisite use of percussion.
