People whose only reference point for classical works are cartoons are probably to be forgiven. Sadly, it's typical but a little pathetic. If Mahler sounds like a cartoon (disturbing, tortured Mahler of all people!) all you need to remember is that he dragged symphonic music kicking and screaming into the 20th Century. 'Nuff said.

So it starts off with 'frere jacques' and then to my ear goes to a Disney village inn and then on to various bizarre and disturbing scenes. I probably won't ever listen to this again, but cheers Gustav, it was emotional.

Leave it to Mahler to have taken a common children tune, Frère Jacques, and put it in the minor mode, and the way he combines all of the themes from this movement in the end! Nothing remarkable about the concept, but how he goes about it is truly testament to his artistic capability.
