Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860 – 18 May 1911) was a Bohemian-Austrian composer and conductor.

Mahler was best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day, but he has since come to be acknowledged as among the most important post-romantic composers – a remarkable feat for a figure whose mature creativity was concentrated in just two genres: song and symphony. Besides the nine completed symphonies, his principal works are the song cycles Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (usually rendered as ‘Songs of a Wayfarer’, but literally ‘Songs of a Travelling Journeyman’) and Kindertotenlieder (‘Songs on the Death of Children’), and the synthesis of symphony and song cycle that is Das Lied von der Erde (‘The Song of the Earth’).

Mahler told fellow composer Jean Sibelius in 1907 that “a symphony should be like the world: it must embrace everything”; putting this philosophy into practice, he brought the genre to a new level of artistic development. Increasing the range of contrasts within and between movements necessitated an expansion of scale and scope (at around 95 minutes, his six-movement Symphony No. 3 is the longest in the general symphonic repertoire) – while the admission of vocal and choral elements (with texts drawn from folk-poetry, Nietzsche, Goethe, Chinese literature, and Medieval Roman Catholic mysticism) made manifest a philosophical as well as autobiographical content.

Last.fm has a lot of fantastic Mahler recordings hidden under bad tags, e.g. everything with Sir John Barbirolli and Dame Janet Baker from EMI or Eliahu Inbal's recordings from Denon. Here's one example: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (1999 Digital Remaster). See the discussion about recommended recordings in the Gustav Mahler group for details. And "Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II etc. is in the charts because of the popular album CLASSICAL FAVOURITES with various artists where only the first track is the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th symphony. You can vote for a correction of the wrong artists on each single track (see the album wiki for an explanation).

Oh! I forgot to mention I found a recording of “Das Lied von der Erde” for piano accompaniment. It’s amazing! I think Mahler’s music sounds great on the piano. This version was written by Mahler himself – it’s just been re-issued on the “Maestro” label (Warner Classics mid price reissues). Cyprien Katsaris is the pianist, with Brigitte Fassbaender and Thomas Moser singing. I paid just $11.00 for it. It was worth many times that.

Hey! Someone else here loves the 7th symphony. How cool. I like to hike to the 2nd movement. Obviously I ignore the tempo, or I’d still be out there! But there are cows about where I hike, and there are cow bells in this piece – as in many others by old Gustav – who was also a hiker I read. He’s wonderful – & a big influence on Shostakovich, among many others.

Arnold Schönberg fue más que eso, fue su protegido. En los últimos momento de su vida, cuando veía el inevitable fin, Gustav exige a Alma y a Moll que se ocupen del porvenir Arnold... éste le debe mucho a Mahler.
