Coma (9:49)

About this track

“Coma” is a song by American hard rock band Guns N’ Roses. It appears on the 1991 album Use Your Illusion I. At 10 minutes, 13 seconds it is the longest track released by the band, even though it lacks choruses.

Slash states that he wrote the music to this song in a house he and Izzy rented in Hollywood Hills, following the Appetite for Destruction tours. In an interview, Axl talks about writing “Coma”:

“I tried to write that song for a year, and couldn’t. I went to write it at the studio and passed out. I woke up two hours later and sat down and wrote the whole end of the song, like, just off the top of my head. It was like, don’t even know what’s coming out, man, but it’s coming. I think one of the best things that I’ve ever written was maybe the end segment of the song “Coma”. It just poured out.”

The song has only been played live four times, possibly due to its length and the strain it causes singer, Axl Rose. A rare live version was featured on Japanese and vinyl copies of the Guns N’ Roses live album Live Era: ‘87-‘93.

According to Duff McKagan, the original title of the song is “Girth” which was inspired by West Arkeen’s penis.

Hey, you caught me in a coma
And I don't think I wanna
Ever come back to this world again
Kinda like it in a coma

How fucking deep and dark is this gnarled, bleeding monster of a song? Axl is probably the most honest guy you could ever meet, he has this agonizing intensity about him that allows such pearls of wisdom to turn a rocking track into absolute emotion and resonating power that connects to you on such a pure level. The last two minutes he barely manages a breath, just a fantastic tide of his mind billowing out into the cosmos.

"Well I've gone sailin', I've gone sailin', I could leave so easily, while friends are calling back to me, I said they're, they're leaving it all up to me, when all I needed was clarity and someone to tell me what the FUCK IS GOING ON!! GODDAMN IT!"

So bad ass. I remember seeing Def Leppard in concert in the early 90s and this song played in the arena before the show. Tons of people were singing along.
