About This Track

Written by: “Catcher In The Rye” was written by Axl Rose and Paul Tobias
in or before 2000.

Catcher In The Rye Songfacts says: The title refers to J.D. Salinger’s novel of adolescence Catcher in The Rye. Rose appears to be questioning in this song why angst-ridden youths, such as Mark Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, appear to be motivated by the book’s anti-hero Holden Caulfield.

Additional information: Brain said he worked on the song. This song is appereantly written as a tribute to John Lennon. Queen guitarist Brian May originally recorded a guitar part for this but his contribution was removed from the final version.

After listening to the garbage the other members have put out, it is obvious Axl was the only one with any musical talent in the original GnR. Picking 2 of the 3 best (new?) guitar players on the planet wasn't a bad idea. Stealing Ashba from Nikki Sixx was genius as well. Having Steep Panther underline is also genius. Slash is a 20 year old has been. get over it MikeH3875. Have you heard the crap he has put out since they broke up?

I expected the album to sound 13 years old, but I was surprised how modern it sounded and how much talent there was on this album. The most unfortunate thing is that Robin Fink and Buckethead (who did the majority of the lead guitar parts) are no longer in the band and Ron Thal had limited studio time to prove himself as DJ Ashba has yet to record with the band. They do sound amazing live though.

This one, Madagascar, and IRS are my favorites from the record. I agree with @MIKEH3875, who suggests that you have to give the album a few listens to really absorb it.

definitely my fave from the new album.this album is one you have to listen to a few times before you fully appreciate it.not your original guns but twenty something years on its a natural progression.i think the most missed ingredient here is without a doubt slash.these tunes could've been much better with some tasty bluesy solos.

This song's got me in a lighter-waving mood... even though I don't smoke.
