About this album

Reprise (2005) Released: 21 Jun 2005 9 tracks (56:59)
American Idiot is the seventh studio album by the American punk rock band Green Day. It was co-produced with longterm collaborator Rob Cavallo and released on September 21, 2004 through Reprise Records.

In mid-2003, the band began recording songs for an album titled Cigarettes and Valentines. However, the master tracks were lost and the band decided to start over rather than re-record Cigarettes and Valentines. They decided to produce a rock opera, inspired by the work of The Who and numerous musicals. It follows the life of “Jesus of Suburbia”, a sort of anti-hero created by Billie Joe Armstrong. Following early recording at Oakland, California’s Studio 880, the band finished the album in Los Angeles.

The album achieved popularity worldwide, charting in 26 countries and reaching number one in nineteen of them, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Since its release, American Idiot has sold over 16 million copies worldwide, including 267,000 in its opening week. The album won numerous awards including a Grammy for Best Rock Album, and was generally well received by critics.

In mid-2003, Green Day convened at Studio 880 in Oakland, California, and recorded about 20 songs for an album titled Cigarettes and Valentines. However, the master tracks went missing. The band, wondering if it should re-record the songs, consulted with producer Rob Cavallo over what to do. Cavallo told the band members to ask themselves if the missing tracks represented their best work.

This album literally revolutionized the way I thought about music. Before I would listen to the the charts, whatever was going and what was the flavour of the week and buying this album randomly on impulse threw me headfirst into an entirely different world where songs could have meaning, they could link and whole albums could have symbolism and recurring elements. One of my favourite albums of all time simply for itself and what it did for me. Actually, probably THE best album in my opinion. peace out

it's not that it isn't punk it's that it's a punk concept album and all little teenies see is music that they can listen to that won't upset their parents.

everything about this album and its circumstances screams punk to me. just because it doesn't sound like the ramones and the sex pistols doesn't mean it's not punk. punk is all about breaking the rules and not giving a fuck what people have to say. i truly do believe that they made this album for themselves. i mean, obviously they wanted it to be successful since they weren't really in a great place at that time in their career, but i don't think they "sold out" or anything. it's just a great album. extremely well-crafted.

And to continue on what you said, if it wasn't for many of those musicians that aren't "real" as you say, Green Day would not be what they are today. The Clash, The Ramones etc.

DavidSmith98 That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. "being punk" is about far more than just the music home skillet. If you know nothing else (clearly you don't) you should at least know that.
