Formed in 2005, Grün is a primarily instrumental, experimental rock band based in Sydney, Australia.
The band is comprised of four members: founders Leon Kelly (guitar, keyboards) and Andre Matkovic (bass, programming), along with Ben Matson (drums) and Piers Twomey (guitar, keyboards). Grün's musical influences include Battles, Jesu, Philip Glass, Alcest, Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Boards of Canada, Swans – and the like.
A German word (English translation: green), Grün were previously known as Greenland, but changed their name due to clashes with several overseas bands.
Greenland however became the title of Grün's debut 2011 album (Laughing Outlaw Records) – produced by the band, mixed by Beau Sherrard and mastered by William Bowden. It followed the band's first EP, The Prisons Of Language (Reverberation / Gizeh Records), both releases featuring previous drummer and long-time friend of the band, Liam Weston. Greenland also includes three songs co-written and sung by another long-time comrade, Sydney artist Katy Wren.
Leon Kelly plays a variety of stringed instruments and keyboards. Having played guitar all of his life, he studied music theory at the Conservatorium of Sydney and has won awards and been nominated for his score for short films "Boy" and "Ruby Slippers", along with commissioned work for theatre and other films. Leon's previous rock bands include Iliad and pioneering Australian doom metal outfit, Cruciform.
Andre Matkovic plays bass, guitar, keys and drums with several bands and singers in Sydney in addition to Grün. He also composes music for short films and theatre, and with Leon recently made the finals of the Tropscore 2010 competition in Australia. Andre played with Iliad, and along with Leon and Piers, is involved with their psychedelic folk-rock side project Quiet Titans.
Ben Matson plays drums with Grün and is also a member of much-admired Adelaide band Diplomat – a group that came to prominence in the early 2000s expertly combining elements of Polvo, Swervedriver and Fugazi. Ben joined Grün in January 2011. Piers Twomey joined the band in April 2011 having contributed guitar parts on two of Greenland's songs. He is also a solo singer songwriter and previously co-founded popular indie rock shoegaze bands The Fragments and Transporter.
