“Ederlezi” is a well-known traditional Roma song, played all over the Balkans. Originally the name Ederlezi is a combination of the (Turkish) names of two Islamic Prophets, Hızır (Al-Khidr) and Ilyas (Elijah), and refers to the day these prophets met on earth, the first day of spring. Hızır + Ilyas = Hıdırellez in Turkish. Hıdırellez is the festival still celebrated in Turkey, especially by its Roma community, marking the beginning of spring. In Christian countries on the Balkan, it coincided with Saint George’s Day. Goran Bregovic made a great version of the song to be heard in the score for Emir Kusturica’s movie Dom za vesanje (Time of the Gypsies).
