  • The Hypelist [Jan 25 - Jan 31]

    30 Jan 2009, 01:27 by jellyfrog23

Five songs I heart this week.

Andrew Bird - How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm
I've been doing a lot of research on World War I lately, and I was really surprised to hear this song, which was written in 1918, in a modern version which is not only not hokey, but really beautiful.

    GoodBooks - Passchendaele
While I'm talking about WWI, this is one of my favorites. Not just one of my favorite songs about WWI, but one of my favorite songs period.

    Sleep Station - Oh Mary
Going along with my war theme here, from the free album Blood Of Our Fathers. I highly recommend anything and everything by Sleep Station. I can't get enough.

    TheTrees - Odd One Out
Unsigned band, new to, definitely worth checking out. Oh, and also lots of free downloads! All their songs have been in heavy rotation on my iPod this week, but this one is my favorite. This one or Stop Talking (oops, I snuck in a 6th song there!).

    Unkle Bob - This Way
  • =BEST ALBUMS OF 2008=

    3 Jan 2009, 20:06 by RichieFM

So for the last few months I have painstakingly been compiling and arranging a number of records released this year for the surprisingly anticipated release of my list of top albums of the year. 2008 was a year of experimentation and growth in the world of music, a year of progressive transition. And while it could be argued that it wasn’t a remarkably pivotal year in the field of landmark records, I truly believe that all of the albums that made it to the list will have a profound influence on future generations of musical discovery. I started with over 200 albums, cut the list down to a mere 40, and eventually ended up with 20 incredible records that have proven their individual status and place on the list. I tried to factor in as many things as possible into consideration while evaluating a record’s artistic value, and where one record may not hit you the way it did me, the purpose behind my listing lies within the potential I found in these albums. …

so i am working for this radio in germany and because i spend so much time listening to new stuff and there is rarely anyone there to speak to or somebody to share some new stuff i though i use this to spread the word...

today i went through all the stuff that arrived here during the last few weeks when i was away. i really made a bad decision taking holidays when its the busiest time in the year for new music.

so after archiving and starting some listening a few things already spirng to my ears as good things...

Dutch Uncles - some band from manchester thats now releasing on an independent label from hamburg tapete records. unbritish but very good.

The Audience - i had to write a report about them some time ago and wasn't really sure what to think but now the new cd arrived "dancers and architects" and i can tell you its great. very energetic. very much like their live how. i like it.

and a new thing i discovered through a friend of mine from england GoodBooks. …
  • One year later I still love

    10 Aug 2008, 03:24 by jellyfrog23

I've been a user for one year and almost 25,000 plays, and in spite of some of the recent frustrations I still love and, uh, spend way too much time here.

To explain why, let's look at some numbers.

Number of artists in my library: 723

Number of artists in my library that I'd heard of before registering at 94

Number of artists in my top 50 overall that I'd heard of before 6

Number of artists in my top 10 overall that I'd heard of before 2

Number of artists in my top 50 this week that I discovered elsewhere: 1

My point being, obviously, that without I'd be missing out on a heckuva lot of music. Some of my favorites have fewer than 15,000 plays. I can't imagine any other way I could have found these guys.

    And some lists...

Artists that I love madly that I might not have ever discovered without

    Carbon Leaf
    Maxïmo Park
    Jump, Little Children
    Little Man Tate
    The Coral
