Criminally overlooked because of the label they appeared on (a criminally maligned label due to the chic nature of ska-bashing thanks to the assholes at Pitchfork), Good for Cows features Ches Smith (formerly of Nels Cline Singers, and currently of Xiu Xiu) on drums and Devin Hoff on bass. They are propulsively experimental, like all good free jazz should be, yet do not settle easily into the unfortunate category of “experimental” music. “Bebop Fantasy” is highly listenable without being pop.
