Stabat mater dolorosa (3:56)

Cover of PERGOLESI: Stabat Mater / Salve Regina in C minor

From PERGOLESI: Stabat Mater / Salve Regina in C minor and 20 other releases

The original hymn, in latin, was written in the 13th century and is based upon the New Testament prophecy by Simeon that a sword would pierce the heart/soul of the mother of Jesus. (Luke 2:35)

Many hold that the composition/arrangement by Pergolesi is the most beautiful and emotive of all.

The first verse roughly translates as “The sorrowful Mother stood, crying, by the cross from which her son was hanging”

Not my preferred version - I would rather hear the Margaret Marshal/Lucia Valentini Terrani/London Symph.Orch./Abbado version - but still very touching and beautiful.

Possibly the most beautiful piece of Setticento vocal music ever created. I would feel impious to complain about the pronunciation by the angels when visiting heaven and listening to them sing this!
