Doug Hopkins actually lived the last verse. He saw his girlfriend who had cheated on him and she sucker-punched him and left him with a black eye, hence the "Your boyfriend's over, I watch your light go out" lyric. This song is really sad. Like, you can hear the despondency and resignation in Robin Wilson's voice. It's probably my favorite song by Gin Blossoms because of this.
bought 'New miserable Experience' when I was about 13, sold it at about 16 thinking I didn't like it, had to buy it again 2 years later coz I kept finding the songs swimming about in my head. Now I'm not so naive I know I love it and have kept it since.
