Northern Italy

In the music of Gianluigi Trovesi () & Gianni Coscia () jazz is one component, but the folk music of Northern Italy predominates, alongside music of the classical tradition, film and theatre music, hints of mazurka, tango, klezmer and more. The music Trovesi and Coscia celebrate on their recent ECM album “In cerca di cibo” (“in search of nourishment”) is deeply and touchingly nostalgic. It is music that is, by turns yearning, mournful, humourous, joyous, poetic, and sentimental.

'Frère Jacques: Round About Offenbach' is pure fun to hear.

These musicians are a vital part of the music of my life. I just cannot get enough of their heart warming mix of jazz and Mediterranean folklore. I just acquired their Frère Jacques (Round about Offenbach) and simply cannot get enough. I recently saw both musicians at work in a beautiful documentary on ECM-founder Manfred Eicher: go and see that one as well. It is called Sounds and Silence.
