London, United Kingdom (1970 – 1980)

Gentle Giant were a British band founded in London, United Kingdom active between 1970 and 1980. The band was known for the complexity and sophistication of its music and for the varied musical skills of its members. All of the band members, except the first two drummers, were multi-instrumentalists. Although not commercially successful, they did achieve a cult following.

The band’s onetime stated aim was to “expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular,” although this stance was to alter significantly with time. While never achieving the commercial heights of progressive rock contemporaries such as Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes or Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant was considered to be one of the most experimental bands in the genre (as well as one of the most experimental rock bands of the 1970s).

Gentle Giant’s music was considered complex even by progressive rock standards, drawing on a broad swathe of music including , , , and music. Unlike many of their progressive rock contemporaries, their “classical” influences ranged beyond the Romantic and incorporated , , and modernist chamber music elements. The band also had a taste for broad themes for their lyrics, drawing inspiration not only from personal events but from philosophy and the works of both François Rabelais and R. D. Laing.

I guess for me it goes 1. King Crimson, 2. Gentle Giant, 3. Pink Floyd, 4. Yes, 5. Camel. Haven't heard enough VDGG to put em on and say what you will about PF and if you consider them prof or not but they have some nice tunes.

Nice list vin... but I would rank: 1 - Van Der Graaf Generator 2 - Yes 3-King Crimson 4 Gentle Giant 5 Camel. It's hard to put one in front of the other cause they are all so good

Вот она, победа акустики над электронными экспериментами в проге(по крайней мере у Gentle Giant). Интересно, что вдохновило группу на такое занятное название?

Gentle Giant are the prog-kings in my opinion. They had such complexity in combination with great musicianship. All the members played up to 5 different instruments, almost like an orchestra... They expanded the frontiers of contemporary music, and their music was way before it's time. It still sounds as fresh, adventurous and fascinating today. Their music was hard to grasp at first, but when you grasp it, you'll never want to let go.

@skooge from a music enthusiast point of view the original release dates make more sense but from a selling stand point the reissue dates make more sense and that's why they are there.

Also, I wish wouldn't show the reissue dates as the actual dates. That's kind of stupid.

If I hadn't also just discovered Caravan and Camel I'd probably be unable to stop listening to Gentle Giant. All seven of the first albums are amazing.
