Biography

(1994 – 2002)

Gay Dad were one of the last UK Brit rock bands to be launched in the late 1990s. They generated massive media interest and had moderate chart success but they failed to sustain their popularity and broke up in 2002. The original line-up consisted of rock critic Cliff Jones (guitar/vocals), James Riseboro (keyboards), Nigel Hoyle (bass), Charley Stone (guitar) and Nicholas Crowe (drummer).

Gay Dad was first formed in 1994 by former Mojo and The Face journalist Cliff Jones, his schoolfriend Baz Crowe, and Nigel Hoyle. Their first demo was recorded with legendary Rolling Stones record producer, Andrew Loog Oldham but proved unsuccessful, and they did not make their live debut until 1995. Early gigs were often a shambles, and by 1996 Jones, who had developed a fascination with psychedelia and glam-rock, began to rethink the band’s approach.

Joined by new keyboardist James Riseboro, they recorded several new tracks at Raezor Studio, Wandsworth, including a song called “To Earth With Love”. Although it was only intended to win them some live dates, the demo attracted keen record company interest and the band signed to London Records in December 1997. With (female) guitarist Charley Stone they toured the UK in early 1998 before starting recording sessions at The Dairy studio in Brixton with producers/sound engineers Gary Langan (ex-Art of Noise) and Chris Hughes (ex-Adam and The Ants).

@unfazed - I have a few-songs-heard snooty personal prejudice going against Silversun Pickups, so I don't know. But part of the anti feeling has to do with what I hear as their abuse of elements of Smashing Pumpkins, so I know at least that part is in the mix! I'll give each of their albums a run through to see if I hear the song that was Gay Dadesque. Friends have been wanting me to give Silversun Pickups more of a chance for a long time, so I can kill two birds there. Thanks very much for suggesting a place for me to look, listening-wise.

Yesterday I heard a song that reminded me of Gay Dad, perhaps with splashes of Coldplay and Smashing Pumpkins. The "Similar Artists" here are mostly just other britpop bands, not really a match in sound . . does anyone know a currently-producing band with a reminiscent sound? I also saw Gay Dad live, and agree they were amazing. But I was less impressed with Transmission, and definitely think the name was limiting. Not bad, but not the most sensible for success. I still wish they'd stuck around longer, to see how they might have evolved/what else they would have produced. A lot of Leisure Noise was great, and showed proper respect of fantastic influences.

Definitely a contender for worst band name ever, simply because it was most certainly why many people didn't take them seriously. Both albums, particularly the debut, are solid pieces of work.
