Biography
London, United Kingdom (Formed in 1988 – present)
London, UK-based Gallon Drunk is James Johnston (vocals, guitar, organ, piano, harmonica); Terry Edwards (saxophone, organ); Leo Kurunis (bass); and Ian White (drums).
Formed in 1988, John Peel admired them, stating: “They don’t sound like anyone else.” Nick Cave said: “Gallon Drunk? Cool as fuck.”
The new Gallon Drunk album, THE ROAD GETS DARKER FROM HERE, will be released 7 May 2012 (UK) and 10 August 2012 (EU) on the Clouds Hill Records label. A new 7” single (vinyl), YOU MADE ME, will be released 16 April 2012 (UK only), including a new video.
A UK tour is scheduled for April 2012 with EU dates to be announced. Gallon Drunk also continues to tour with Lydia Lunch in their collaborative project, Big Sexy Noise.
Their extensive discography (see below) began with their 1988 self-released 7-inch single, “Snakepit/Please Give Me Something”, through to their most recent album, 2007’s The Rotten Mile. Their 1993 album From The Heart Of Town was nominated for a Mercury Prize.
James Johnston was also a guitarist with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2003—2008), joining them for their Lollapalooza tour in 1994.
