Question is, does he really import some meaning unto the different songs? Is there the consistency which 9 out of 10 conceptual works lack?
Ash sets the mixtape off with "Muddy Swim Trunks" using a pleasantly soulful Madlib beat, attempting to get the sound of casual lyricism. You know, when an artist just flows well enough for to forget he's just rapping and not reading poetry. Sadly, his attempt fails as much as his debut album did.
But then the DJ cuts to another beat. It's Liquid Swords, an absolute classic that Roth just never overpowers, while he (in a nonconsitent) recalls some fictional childhood tales. The lyrical high-point of the song:
