Biography
There are three artists/bands called Freebass.
a)
Freebass is the name of a band formed in Manchester, UK by Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order & Monaco), Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield (The Stone Roses & Primal Scream) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths). All three founding members were bass players in their former groups, which resulted in the band name Freebass being adopted. The group was formed in 2005 and had significant difficulties finding a vocalist but in 2007 recruited Gary Briggs of Haven.
The debut EP Two Worlds Collide ep was finally released digitally in March 2010, followed by the LP It’s A Beautiful Life in April. Both were released in physical CD form in August and September 2010 respectively.
After Rourke’s official departure in 2010, the band’s line-up settled to: Gary Briggs (vocals & guitar), Peter Hook (bass), Mani (bass), Nat Watson (guitar), Paul Kehoe (live drums) and Phil Murphy (keyboards). Briggs, Hook & Mani, the core trio, appeared in all promotional photographs / interviews.
The band had officially split on 10th September 2010 after numerous personal attacks against Peter Hook were written by Mani via his Twitter account on the previous day. Mani has since apologised for his remark, stating that his comments were “out of character” and that it was a “venomous, spiteful reaction to a lot of things that are going on in my life right now and I chose to vent my frustrations and anger at one of my true friends in this filthy business, and ventured into territory which was none of my concern”.
