Franz Krommer (Czech: František Vincenc Kramář) (27th November 1759–8th January 1831) was a Czech composer of classical music.

From 1773 to 1776, he studied violin and organ with his uncle, Antonín Mattias Kramár, in Turán. Here he became organist along with his uncle in 1777. In 1785 he returned to Vienna as violinist in the orchestra of the duke of Styria, now in Simontornya in Hungary.

  • Try the recordings of the Clarinet & double clarinet concertos (plus the Hoffmeister clarinet concerto) by Walter & Anne Boeykens, on Harmonia Mundi. I think, to be honest, that he is becoming better know; certainly there are lots more recordings of his music out there now.
  • A composer who deserves to be better known, I have enjoyed a couple of these Naxos discs for some time.
