“Album of the Year” - La Blogotheque, 2008

How is Survival different than your other records? Well first off, it has way more ramshackle. It isn’t even close. Also, it was named Album of the Year by France’s greatest blogotheque, La Blogotheque. That’s right, FRANCE; maybe you’ve heard of it?

This record is a pioneer of what we’re calling ‘Neo-Folk-Noir’, because ‘freak folk’ is just lazy, people. At first blush the songs seem indelibly spare, yet there are worlds at work beneath, built brick by brick on uneasy foundations, then abruptly cut short. Strung out folk progressions are backed with a haze of fuzzy noise and wavering choir vocals, horns blare in the background while guitars and skittering electronics screech to either side. These songs are down, but not out, and will melt your heart while stealing your soul. An aural moonlight walk through the barest of city streets, best enjoyed on warm vinyl (limited to 300 copies), though the coldness of Cd somehow makes sense as well.

Saw the album cover at the record store today and had to check them out. How did I miss these guys last year?!?! Definitely one of the best albums of 2008.

Not half bad, guys! I really like your jams, and really dig the hesitantly slow, loping strums. I would suggest throwing up your vocals to the front a little bit more, I heard snippets of your lyrics and they sounded really good but I wasn't able to lock on to the rest of them.
