Floater began in 1993 when Robert Wynia (lead vocals, bass), Peter Cornett (drums), and Dave Amador (guitar), got together in Eugene, Oregon, making their start at garage parties and the U of O beer garden. With compelling lyrics and adept storytelling, their music shifts in mood from the insistent and heavy to the melodic and soulful, comprising the signature sound for which Floater is best known.

Floater’s regional success was noticed by Elemental Records, who put out their first full-length record, “Sink” in 1994. That same year Floater began a string of sold out shows at the Community Center for the Performing Arts (The WOW Hall) that is still unbroken to this day.

In 1995 Floater released “Glyph” and toured the country for the next two years supporting the record. The single, “Danny Boy” received heavy college and commercial radio play, in many cities outselling major label releases. Floater received nominations to the preliminary level of the Grammy’s from NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) in 1995 under Best Rock Performance for “Sink” and in 1996 under Best Alternative Performance for “Glyph.” (Prelims are determined by nominations from the NARAS members).

In 1998, following their move to Portland, Oregon (where the band currently resides), Floater released their third full-length record, “Angels in the Flesh and Devils in the Bone.” The second concept album by the band (“Sink” was the first), “Angel’s” brought a new vibe to Floater.

I met Robert at the Pumpkins show in the Gorge for Zeitgeist. He's freaky tall and spastic. I hope they still play in Portland.

i remember the first time i saw floater. it was at a knrk show at la luna. when i walked in they were on stage. it was all over for me at that moment. i've seem them so many times. i once drove from portland to eugene to see them at john henry's. i got pulled over for speeding on the way there(no ticket!!) and during the show i was dancing with my eyes closed outside of the pit of people. next thing i know i am flying across the room and landed on a table. my ass was bruised for weeks! oh the good ol' days.....

I remember those days Travis and even talked with Rob about it years ago. My first Floater show was at La Luna way back in the day. Remember how brutal Floater fans were towards opening bands? With Angels Rob said they were hoping to weed some of those fans out. They were also receiving offers from metal labels after Glyph was released, but they didn't want to rewrite Glyph their entire career. So Floater did what they had to as artists to survive and to continue writing interesting music. They wrote Angels. When I first heard it I didn't quite get it, there were hints of their former metal sound, but no outright metal tracks on Angels. Now I consider Angels to be one of Rock's best kept secrets.

I've been listening to these guys since Sink, And eventhough I think Sink and Glyph are two of the best albums ever, I cant help but feel that since Angels they have turned thier back on all those that would walk through hell to see them for 5$ at La Luna.
