Fleming and John is a musical husband and wife team, Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter, currently living in Nashville, Tennessee.

The couple met while attending Belmont College in Nashville, and immediately began collaborating on songs. While pursuing a record contract, Painter began playing in studio sessions for artists like dc Talk, Sixpence None the Richer, Indigo Girls, Jars of Clay, Nanci Griffith, and Jewel.

In 1994, the band recorded “Harder to Believe than Not To” for I Predict A Clone, a tribute album to Steve Taylor. The following year, the couple released their first album, Delusions of Grandeur on Universal Records. Friend and fan Ben Folds, who called Fleming and John the “Carpenters of the 1990s with Led Zeppelin’s rhythm section”, invited them to open for his band. They continue to perform and record with Folds from time to time. And during Ben Folds Five’s success of “Brick” Fleming & John helped on a side project of Folds’ called Fear Of Pop. John still did a lot of the orchestrations for Folds’ albums, from Whatever and Ever, Amen through Songs For Silverman. (Ben Folds himself played drums on a number of songs on the Delusions Of Grandeur album.) Recently, Painter produced Folds’ ex-wife’s record Frally. Painter also did a lot of work for the Hoodwinked animated film’s soundtrack.

While watching F&J videos on Youtube, I came across this relatively recent track (from 2007) called 'Tangerine' by Worldwide Groove Corporation. Fleming does the vocals on it. Look for it :)

I actually just ordered DoG from an Amazon seller for a decent price - my original copy snapped in half while I was trying to clean it a couple years ago. Strangely, I couldn't find any for sale online at that point. They're there, now, though. I'm happy, too, that was one of my "got me through high school" albums.

heheheh I got Ugly girl from a Fiona Apple fan who thought it was her song, but indeed, it sounds nothing like her, but it was the only song I had from 'Fiona' back then, and I loved it, but when I downloaded more Fiona Apple I discovered it couldn't have been the same girl singing those songs.. Well, I still think it's a great song =)

Ugly Girl is OK but many of their songs are much better...try The Pearl, Suppressed Emotions, or Comfortable. Compared to these Ugly Girl gives me the sickly feeling of a novelty track.

Tagged quirky? Indeed they are. Ben Folds co-wrote Ugly Girl so you can never go wrong with that one.

fiona apple? really? remember looking for that track one time, and jill sobule was given credit, which i knew was incorrect. but i think jill sobule makes more sense than fiona apple. and they seem to working on new material according to their myspace. i'm trying to keep tabs on them over there now.
