Manhattan, New York, United States (1996 – present)

Fiona Apple (Fiona Apple McAfee Maggart, born September 13, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. Her albums, Tidal (1996), When The Pawn… (1999), Extraordinary Machine (2005) and The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (2012), have sold over five million copies worldwide.

Born in Manhattan, New York, United States, Apple made her break into the music industry when a friend, who babysat for a record executive, handed her employer a demo. Apple’s husky voice, nimble piano skills, and mature lyrics got the attention of Sony executive Andy Slater, who signed her to a record deal.

In 1996, Apple’s debut album Tidal was released by a subsidiary of Sony. The album went on to sell 3 million copies (certified triple platinum) domestically.

Criminal,” the third single from Tidal, became Apple’s breakthrough hit. The song garnered a great deal of attention, in part for its suggestive lyrics (“I’ve been a bad, bad girl…”) but also for the controversial music video, directed by Mark Romanek. The video featured a waifish, half-dressed Apple surrounded by the aftermath of a party, including unconscious party-goers. The video received heavy rotation on VH-1 and MTV and gained the singer immediate notoriety. Years later, Apple said, “I wasn’t (comfortable). And you can see that in the video. It’s not sexy. It’s disturbing.”

I remeber being like 9 years old when my eldest sister introduce me to Cat Power, Feist and Fiona Apple, and I used to love her songs. Now I'm 17 years old and I am still listening to their music. Fiona taught a lot of things, She always says what she thinks and she's not afraid of making mistakes, because that how she learns. That the way I want to be and I'm not afraid of saying that In the future, l will be someone like her. Happy 37th Birthday, Fiona, your music have really change my life. ♥

I think I resonate so well with her music because through it I am at peace with my insecurities, and I find another who I can relate my ever-occurring occupant of sadness (knowingly, but most of the time is enclosed in insensibility) and the solace of that through isolation. My expectations of people, cannot be met at times due to me being closed off and in love with my palace of solitude. Through my unawareness of how in my feelings I can get, I find tranquility: 'It's calm under the waves, in the blue of my oblivion'. Fiona's music will always have a place in my mind, and I will always love the woman.

They may not be similar artist in style of music but they are with genre and demographic. Fiona is ultimately an "alternative" musician and so she is similar to other artists who are within the "alternative" genre and probably around the same age, similar and/or same audience, similar music in terms of lyrics, sound, production, etc.
