The Hot Knife Songfacts says that according to an interview with New York magazine’s Dan Lee, Apple suspects the roots of the song lay in a Bach concert that she’d seen in New York, and the Supremes tune "Where Did Our Love Go?.” She explained the inspiration is the place where two different types of music, “crack together,” which has always given her “huge satisfaction.”

I love how the endings of her albums tend to be so certain & strong & affirmative in a way that’s still true to how complex navigating life actually is. I always feel like she answers a question she had at the beginning of each album and each answer isn't exactly what she was looking for but is still good and probably as good as it gets. In this song there’s such a wonderful acceptance of how layered the “if”s and “maybe”s life throws at us are. You have to fight with your brain over and over to get anywhere and it will never really stop, but the same thing that makes you fight can be beautiful and empowering sometimes because your heart is so huge that there’s room for everything painful.
