Fellini was one the most notorious São Paulo underground acts from the mid-80’s. They recorded some of the most notable lo-fi albums of the period. Fellini was made up of journalist Cadão Volpato on vocals and multi-instrumentalist and journalist Thomas Pappon (also from Smack and formerly of Voluntários da Pátria) plus Ricardo Salvagni and Jayr Marcos. They fused European post punk influences with electro bossa, drum machine patterns and synths. Fellini released 5 albums, 3 on Baratos Afins, and 1 on Wop Bop and one on Rio de Janeiro’s independent label Midsummer Madness Records.

Saw them live in Ipanema at a theatre there. Wonderful show and crowd. Later I bought their three first albums from Baratos Afins in São Paulo. Três Lugares Diferentes is a great disk. Fellini continues to be our most precious hidden treasure not only for international audiences but also for many Brazilians as they never moved out of the indie underground scene back then.

The Fellini's musician has maded another band in 1992, called Funziona Senza Vapore... incredible sound, too. This project was very fast, but the sound it's for long time. Recomended.

The post-punk scene of brazil made up some great bands like Fellini, Harry, Akira S. And I guess that these bands never got out of Brazil because Brazil was a hole in the eighties, and if wasn't someone from outside who rescued these bands from obscurity, people from other countries would never heard of them, not only because their portuguese lyrics. Harry was a band who made songs in english too.

For all the worldwide success of Anglo-American music, it's a pity many bands from other countries don't attain the same type of popularity outside their homeland (unless they sing in English, pfft). Because Fellini are right up there with the best of 'em. Amor Louco, O Adeus De Fellini....top releases I would recommend to anyone interested in good music.
