About this album

Album of the Year is the sixth and final studio album by Faith No More. It was released on June 3, 1997, and was the only album to feature the band’s final guitarist Jon Hudson.

The album was generally received with moderate praise from both critics and fans. The title of this album displays the band’s sense of irony, as the majority of the members of Faith No More were ultimately unhappy with the outcome of Album of the Year and the direction it had taken them. Vocalist Mike Patton was quoted as saying that Faith No More’s demise could be partially related to a mutual feeling of artistic futility as a group: “We were starting to make bad music.”

During touring in support of Album of the Year, Faith No More frequently wore suits during performances.

The album sleeve did not feature printed lyrics; however, Mike Patton and Billy Gould did submit official lyrics to

As of July 2007, the album had sold 213,000 copies in the U.S. This nearly matched the total for King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime but was a significantly lower figure than the other two albums featuring Mike Patton on vocals achieved. In other charts it fared much better, peaking at #1 in Australia and New Zealand. It also went Platinum in Australia for sales of more than 70,000 copies. The album only had slight impact in the UK charts but it did go Gold for sales of more than 100,000 copies. The biggest downfall for this album was perhaps in the US where sales were significantly lower than previous efforts, though it still managed to sell a million copies worldwide.

This is much much better than The Real Thing, which is their worst album. It's kind of like King for a Day except much more focused and concise. It would be interesting to see if they continue the sound of this record on their seventh album, if they ever make it.

I definitely prefer it to The Real Thing. Though this does have a couple duds.

Been digging this one a lot over the past year or so. Stripsearch, Pristina, Mouth to Mouth, Last Cup of Sorrow... lots and lots of good songs on here.

I sold this album to a pawn shop ages ago. I kind of feel like an asshole about it now. It's not that bad.

I can't understand all the criticism to Jon Hudson. He did an amazing job and his playing style fitted perfectly in the band. He even had an active role on the writing process. The rest of the band played great as well (Roddy's keyboard even returned to be one of the main instruments). I don't know if it's my favorite FNM album (I think KFAD has that honor), but I still really appreciate this one.

FromSydney; I understand what you mean about Patton's vocal in this album. He had much more experience and liberty to show his true potential in this last production. BUT, i do not agree with you entirely. The Real Thing is the fucking real deal, not only commercially or publicly, It actually introduced ourselves to FNM. The Album of the Year is a great motherfucking sound, not bad at all, but is not the very best as far as I can see.

I'm going to say something extremely controversial and say that I prefer Album of the Year to The Real Thing. *Dodges spears and bullets* The Real Thing probably flows better as an album and Album of the Year doesn't have as much versatility as Angel Dust or KFAD...FFAL. It doesn't really have the same power as those two albums. But there's more songs on Album of the Year I really like than songs I like on The Real Thing. Plus I think Patton's vocals are much better on Album of the Year than The Real Thing and also the fact that he actually wrote the music unlike The Real Thing where he came in and wrote the lyrics to fit the pre-written songs in two weeks. As for people saying Album of the Year is their least favourite including the two Mosley albums, to you I say: GRRRRRR! :P

I like this a lot more than King For A Day, it's my second favourite FNM only behind Angel Dust. [2]

This album is very nice. Obviously not as good as or in the same direction as my fave albums The Real Thing and Angel Dust, but definitely an album that is very good and has some of their strongest tunes. "Pristina" is just so amazing...
