Exit Oz is a dark jazz / post rock project from Timisoara, Romania. It was started by Alexandru Iovan (tenor saxophone, vocals) and Ovidiu Zimcea (synthesiser, sampler) in December 2011.
“Împământenit”, the debut LP, was released locally in May 2014 at Sinagoga din Cetate in Timișoara and internationally in July at Gărâna Jazz Festival to great critical acclaim. It focuses on the love-hate relationship with the musicians’ place of origin and in doing so, it takes influence from the local folklore both in paraphrasing traditional ritualistic themes and in the conceptual narrative that it develops.
After a limited tour following the release of the album in Romania, the band has retreated from the live scene to continue work on the sophomore album. While the first is centred on a study of the “soil” as a starting point - to be taken religiously and profanely - the following will focus on “water” - without which life cannot exist, but which can also take life away.
The project has benefited along the years from talented musicians such as Lucian Naste (guitar on “Împământenit”), Jorge Lopes (guitar and production on “Împământenit”), Dorothea Iordănescu (keyboards, “Împământenit” tour) and Sebastian Hamburgher (drums, “Împământenit” tour).
