Biography

Santa Cruz, San Jose CA, United States (1998 – present)

Estradasphere, formed in Santa Cruz, California in 1998, make music with an approach that blurs the lines between traditional and experimental forms with a provocative mix of composition and improvisation. The members are Timb Harris (violin/trumpet), Jason Schimmel (guitar/banjo/keyboards/vocals), Tim Smolens (upright and electric bass/vocals), Kevin Kmetz (Tsugaru Shamisen/guitar/keyboards), Adam Stacey (accordion/keyboards/clavinet), and Lee Smith (drums/percussion).

These accomplished musicians blend and contrast styles in compelling and sometimes shocking ways. Their art is not an experiment. It is passionate and alive because of their deep understanding and mastery of the individual styles of music they play. Estradasphere’s music is cerebral, vibrant, and daringly playful.
The Estradasphere experience includes passion, humor, and at times, awe-inspiring brilliance. Their music is complex yet inviting, seducing the listener across time, space, and genre.
Estradasphere shows are intensely dynamic: outrageous yet introspective, tongue-in-cheek yet sincere. Every show is unique, never ceasing to stir excitement and challenge the audience’s expectations.
They continue to expand their performance experience, appearing at nightclubs, festivals, universities, symphony halls, theaters, and even circuses. Currently based out of Seattle, WA.

When I don't know what to listen to I can just put on this band. They've got a little bit of almost everything that I love in music plus some craziness that just elevates the listening experience to a whole new level. Finally getting to What Deers May Come after listening through Buck Fever=mind blown.

This band never ceases to amaze me. Been digging into all the side projects and other related bands lately. All are well worth checking out... I.S.S., El Douje, God Of Shamisen, Monsters Of Shamisen, Deserts Of Traun, Orange Tulip Conspiracy, Don Salsa. Brilliant stuff. Still gotta hear some of Whooley's solo stuff though...

Yeah, it's so long away that it makes me think it's some kind of prank, but then why would they resurrect their website just for that? It seems like quite an arbitrary time; do they all know that's when they're going to be free to do Estradasphere then? Why not sooner? Perhaps they're not reforming or anything but their albums are going to get reissued. Maybe on vinyl as well as CD. Either way, it's a hell of a long time to wait and find out... I'll stop speculating now.
