Esther Apituley was born in Amsterdam. She started playing the violin at the age of twelve and switched to the viola fairly soon afterwards. She graduated from the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory under Misha Geller, and then took lessons from Bruno Giuranna at the Hochschule Für Musik in Berlin. During the early years of her studies, Esther Apituley was also very active as a singer and saxophonist in the genre of light music. Esther Apituley currently teaches Viola at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory. She plays a Bolink viola specially built for her.

Esther Apituley launched her career as a soloist in 1990. She gave her first recital in the Concertgebouw in that year. Many performances followed. Her playing was received with much enthusiasm, and she accordingly disproved the prevailing image of the viola as a voice in the middle range, serving others.

Among other things Esther Apituley was a soloist with the National Ballet Orchestra, North Holland Philarmonic, Metropole orchestra and the Radio Chamber orchestra. The viola concertos by Berlioz, Bartòk and Chiel Meijering, the symphony concertante by Mozart and the Lachrymae by Benjamin Britten are among her performances.

Over the years Esther Apituley has collaborated with various chamber music ensembles, and dance and theatre groups, including the Borodin Quartet, the Colarado Quartet, Dance group Krisztina de Châtel and many other ensembles.
