Biography

Sweden (1990 – 2008)

Esbjörn Svensson Trio (or e.s.t) were a Swedish formed in 1990 with Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (double bass) and Magnus Öström (drums). They are not to be confused with Electro Shock Therapy or an Italian band EST, which has an album listed here: Mostrati.

e.s.t were renowned for their vibrant style - playing in venues to young crowds. They achieved great commercial success and critical acclaim throughout Europe. Their 1999 release “From Gagarin’s Point of View” started their international breakthrough, being the first e. s.t. album to be released outside of Scandinavia through the German label ACT. The group was the first — and still the only — European Group to appear on the cover of Downbeat Magazine.

Esbjörn Svensson tragically died after a diving accident in Sweden on June 14, 2008. He was 44 years old.

In 1995 and 1996 Esbjörn Svensson was awarded Swedish Jazz Musician of the Year and 1998 Songwriter of the Year, and the 1997 release “Winter in Venice” – consisting mainly of original material – was awarded the Swedish Grammy. “Strange Place For Snow”, E.S.T.’s 2002 release earned numerous awards including the Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (from the German Phonoacademy), the German Jazz Award, Choc de l’année (Jazzman, France), the Victoire du Jazz – the French Grammy – as best international act and also the Revelation of the Festival award, a special award from Midem. In December 2004, E.S.T. were awarded the Hans Koller prize as European Artist of the Year.

If you're an E.S.T. fan like me, whose missing Esbjorn - check out his bandmates' new albums. ///// Drummer - Magnus Ostrom http://www.last.fm/music/Magnus+%C3%96str%C3%B6m I love this album! To me, it captures everything I loved about E.S.T. And Magnus, Dan & Pat Metheny reunite on 'Ballad for E' - a beautiful tribute to their late friend. ///// Bassist - Dan Bergland's Tonbruket http://www.last.fm/music/Tonbruket Another great album; more experimental & postrock.

In my opinion their best song is "Tuesday Wonderland" , I am shocked that it is not on neither of the top tracks lists!

The Childhood Dream... when I listen that double bass, whatever I may be doing, I have to stop and close my eyes and enjoy it. Is too sad he's gone.

Björkviks Brygga, where Esbjörn sadly lost his life, is truly a cursed place. I was taking the bus to a friend and due to Stockholms lousy public transport information i accidentally got off at Björkviks Brygga. It was in the middle of the night, it was pitch black and freezing cold, i had to walk for like an hour to get to my destination. At the time i wasn't familiar with Esbjörn or his work, but in retrospect i shudder at the sight of those cold waters just a tad bit more knowing that they took one of my favourite musicians away from us.

The three 10+ minute songs on 301 are amazing, the rest are pretty good as well.
