Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Detective Daughter reminds me of ELYSIAN FIELDS, which happens to precede Emily in my alphabetical list. Great song!

I find this quote from Mark Prindle suitable: "I don't know drums from an ass in the ground but.... that r'n'b drum sound where the hard beat goes 'KACK' like one of those fuckin' doctor things that slams down and pricks your finger when they want to take your blood. If you ever want to demolish the tranquility of your heartwarming piano ballad, I'd advise going with the 'KACK' electronic beat. The aural equivalent of a man beating himself in the skull with a bone pulled from his own amputated arm, the 'KACK' beat has a promising future in sucking all positive lifeforce out of the universe."

I agree with ifeltyourshape, the 'melancholy version' is so much more beautiful.

I had already fallen for this song in the first minute... Then I got to the Lennon reference. Oh my God. Emily Haines. Good God. I'm in love with you.

Is this version remixed or something? It sounds different from what I have.

I'm not crazy about this version of the song. The 7 minute version she did years ago without the Soft Skeleton for the Sprig Single is so, so much better.

Her concert in Toronto last month was BS... she let some idiot 16 year old play for 80% of her show, and then barely played any songs herself before saying "these songs are depressing me, who else wants to play?"... f-ing lame. I still like the tunes, but I'm not going to her concerts any more
