The Bull Of Heaven Parts I & II (8:27)

Cover of Tablet of Destinies

From Tablet of Destinies

The Bull of Heaven derives its title from the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. It was originally conceived of as a three-part song in the Berlin School genre, with the three parts referencing the three stages in the tale of The Bull of Heaven: Part I, Inanna demands The Bull from An; Part II, The arrival of The Bull; Part III, Slaying The Bull. Part III, however, remains unpublished.

Despite most of the song being in the Berlin School genre, Part I deviates from this and is a slowly evolving atmospheric soundscape over which an Asian-sounding plucked string instrument, realized on a clavinet synthesizer, takes on the solo duties. As this part dissolves into liquid sound effects, Part II comes in with a slow Moog Modular bass sequence while Mellotron strings, distant B3 organ, electric piano and various synthesized flutes and woodwinds paint the background with a dark and mysterious sense of waiting. Bubbling and percussive arpeggiated synths augment the bass line as melodic synth parts become more the focus, the whole coming to an abrupt conclusion as the Bull of Heaven arrives, ready for battle.
