Don Gibson of Shelby, North Carolina, a textile worker who became a prolific and important Nashville songwriter, wrote and recorded “I Can’t Stop Loving You” in 1958. He is also known for writing the monster hit “Sweet Dreams” for Patsy Cline,” as well as the hit country song “Oh Lonesome Me,” recorded by several artists. Ray Charles, who always boasted a great love of country music, recorded the song in 1962, taking it all the way to Number One, also recording Gibson’s “Oh, Lonesome Me,” on his album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. Elvis added “I Can’t Stop Loving You” to his “act” in 1969 during his first run at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The tune wound up on vinyl in 1969 on Elvis’s album entitled Elvis In Person at the International Hotel, as well as “From Memphis to Vegas, From Vegas to Memphis.” The version recorded for the ‘69 live album is especially powerful, showing off Elvis’s vocal range. The King puts his own twist on the vocal, reaching for a couple of soaring high notes on the chorus. “I Can’t Stop Loving You” serves as the high point of the evening during the filmed live concert featured on “That’s the Way it Is,” a video documentary produced by MGM that follows Elvis’s rehearsals, preparation, and live performances at the International Hotel.
