Biography

Elizabeth Cotten (January 5, 1895 - June 29, 1987 in Syracuse) was an American musician. Her style was traditional and , but she is known for her unique method of playing a right-handed guitar “upside down” in standard tuning, picking the high melody with her right thumb. This style has become know as “Cotten picking.”

As a child, she toyed with her older siblings instruments, and began playing the guitar upside down (left handed). By age 8 she was playing songs, and scraped together enough money for her own guitar.

She possessed a remarkable ability to hear a song and play it exactly after hearing it only once. By her early teens she was writing her own songs, one of which was Freight Train, which would go on to be one of her most recognized.

Cotten’s’ unmistakably original chords, melodies and finger picking techniques have influenced many musicians, and in 1984 she won the Grammy Award for “Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording” for her album, “Elizabeth Cotten Live”.

@Echos_Myron According to the liner notes, Brenda Evans is Elizabeth Cotten's great-granddaughter. Apparently she was 12 when it was recorded, and she (along with her siblings) even contributed to the lyrics.

Her music has the same terribly sad yet cheerfully sweet simple feeling of Mississippi John Hurt's. And that's just about the best thing you could say about anyone.

Hi, I just love her music, musicianship and her as a generous, resilient, humble, strong & wicked funny human being so for any fans of Elzabeth Cotten, for all who admire her, for those who felt inspired by her music, and for all cotten&finger pickin' musicians out there ... I dared start this group. For her and about her and her influences and her influence. Kind of kindred-ancestors and the Legacy. I need help as I'm very much a newbie here, only having heard of her in college and only having listened to, seen a rare live performances and fallen in love with her talent in my 30s. Join me/us if you feel strongly enough about her, hell, just join us out of curiosity. She truly *is* the universal grandma of all who aspire to 'pick' up where she left off or to just listen and worship from afar :)
