Vaduz, Liechtenstein (2003 – present)

Elis is a band from Vaduz, formed in 2003 after the split of Erben der Schöpfung in 2002. The band currently consists of Sandra Schleret (clean vocals), Pete Streit (guitars), Chris Gruber (guitars), Tom Saxer (bass, harsh vocals), and Max Naescher (drums). Former members include Sabine Dünser, Franco Koller, René Marxer, and Jürgen Broger.

Elis began their musical career under the name Erben der Schöpfung in 2000. In 2001, they released their first single “Elis” as well as their debut album “Twilight”. The band has appeared live at the Wave Gotik Festival in Leipzig, among others, has held on to favorable positioning on the DAC-Charts, and has remained well represented in the scene’s press. Germany’s Orkus Magazine, for example, featured Erben der Schöpfung as their top newcomer act of the month. This choice was later more than confirmed by the publications readership, who extended the honor by choosing the band as their Newcomer of 2001.

Following their split with Oliver Falk, the band re-emerged in 2003 under the new alias Elis. Produced at Mastersound Studio by Alexander Krull (Atrocity, Leaves’ Eyes), “God’s Silence, Devil’s Temptation” was simultaneously released on Napalm Records with the re-release of Erben der Schöpfung’s 2001 debut, “Twilight”.

Sandra ist umso erstaunlicher, als ich dachte. Die Tatsache, dass Simone gestorben ist und die Band muss weitergehen, schildert sie die Band Bild, wie es war und stel t werden.

Alex Krull has produced all of their stuff so far (including Twilight and the Elis single), so you can't really lay a change in style to his feet. And producing is basically what he does for a living (he owns the mastersound studio afaik). I think they have barely changed since Griefshire (which was more like Catharsis than it was like the older albums), basically the only difference is they have no strings (in a sense of a real mini-orchestra as they have on Griefshire).

I lent out my digi for "Catharsis" and I haven't really listened to it from a production standpoint. Too difficult to judge that from Ipod and MP3. As a drummer I have to be the first to admit he does mix the drums a bit too high. (though as a drummer I do appreciate that fact as well!) I have a 5.1 surround set-up with a sub woofer and it's like an earthquake in my place when I play an Elis disc. Max is a very accomplished drummer however so it doesn't sound like noise, it's musical and there is certainly logic behind what he chooses to play. I guess to me as an Elis fan, I want to hear the main instruments from the band. What you are discussing is Krull's programming and according to the credits, Elis has gotten involved in that as well. It would be cool to have an interview with Elis from a technical standpoint (drum, guitar magazines or websites) I'm just not certain these places have embraced groups like this though.

To be honest, I am not very familiar with Leaves' Eyes or Atrocity. I do have "Lovelorn" but have not spun that one for a very long time. I will have to defer to both of you for your observations on Krull's production skills. No question a bad producer can completely ruin a great album. The producer is supposed to be the guide of the recording process. They make suggestions to the band on what sounds good and what might not belong. At times they may actually lend their musical talents (and most of them are musicians to one degree or another) Sir George Martin played piano on a few tracks by the Beatles for example. I'm not sure what kind of relationship Elis has with Krull in terms of production. the man has a lot going on even with his own 2 bands and others as well? I think he takes on too much at once. And truth be told, he may be a little too hands on with Elis from a musician's point of view. However, much of what the fans love about the older albums are his ideas and programming

Well you can definitely hear that its produced by Leave's Eyes' Alexander Krull...because it has the same mediocre mix as Njord from LE...and you can clearly hear the influences in the sound of instruments and all that stuff...its a shame whence a "underground" band comes to major producers, they all put their f**king own style into the record instead of respecting and keeping the original style of the band they work with itsself. thats what i think about it

I'm starting to like Catharsis, but it feels weird... They've changed so much since Griefshire (which is an insanely perfect album to me), it's pretty hard to tell it's still Elis. However, the album is definitely very well written. If only they had a better producer, all the Mastersound releases sound dull and flat unfortunately. I mean what's with the faint piano? Instruments are there to be heard.... well. That was my two cents...
