Biography

France (1993 – 2007)

Elend is a band from France formed in 1993 by composers and multi-instrumentalists Iskandar Hasnawi and Renaud Tschirner. The band’s name is German for “misery”, however “im Elende sein” is also an Old German expression for “to be far away”. The music can be described as gothic and orchestral music with post-romanticism undertones, or simply violent neoclassical. They are often classed as a metal act due to the fact that in their earlier days, they were signed to a label that released metal music almost exclusively. In actuality, though their sound has sometimes been very violent, they have never been metal of any form.

In an interview with a French magazine posted in June 2007 on their website, Iskander Hasnawi indicated that the costs and difficulties of recording the orchestral music associated with Elend have made it impossible to continue with the Elend project. Both composers will be continuing with personal projects, including L’Ensemble Orphique.

You can hear one sample by Ensemble Orphique via Soundcloud. It seems to be a more experimenting, less classical side of Elend, an electronic continuation to "A World in their Screams". And I wouldn't compare Arcana or Elend with any of the older and bigger projects, because both band are very unique and they took their own path, this leaving the DCD basis they both claim. I could also here the similarity between Elend and the French baroque composer, Jean-Féry Rebel ("Le Cahos" from "Les Elemens et Autres Pieces").

@BrunoBasta Is this 'Ensemble orphique' Elend-like? Recommended tracks? Thx. - On Arcana. Not really similar. Arcana sounds more like a Dead Can Dance project. Whereas Elend to me, sounds more like a mix of old 3rd & the Mortal, Ataraxia and/or Stoa and even Coil, Tuxedomoon or Current 93 in some experimentations.

From fb. Elend: that's not going to happen. We don't have the time to work together as we did in the past. So Elend is dead. Ensemble orphique: more news soon.

@kasra-be : well there's nothing more to expect from Last.fm the same as other virtual communities; the Idea of listening and relating to music( for me living) is buried under the idea of communicating and having the appearance! similarities here are based on the interests of the scrobblers not a critically sorted genres by strong ears.

People live in a community [...] from which the man outside the community, the “man without peace,” is excluded—a German understands what “misery” [Elend] or êlend [other country] originally means. - Nietzsche - On the Geneaology of Morality. I wonder if their name was inspired by this quote. Even disregarding the author and his ideologies completely, and focusing on the aesthetic value of these words, I can see how it could have been an inspiration related to their first circle.

Devil Doll are great! Although comparing them with Elend is useless. Both artists have their own charm. I can only hope that they return with another album sometime in the near future.

@Morkner "Scariest"? I guess you haven't yet tried Mr.Doctor's "Devil Doll" discrography, which makes "A World in their Screams" seem like ambient pop.
