France (1993 – 2007)

Elend is the name of a band from France formed in 1993 by composers and multi-instrumentalists Iskandar Hasnawi and Renaud Tschirner. The band’s name is German for “misery”, however “im Elende sein” is also an Old German expression for “to be far away”. The music can be described as gothic and orchestral music with post-romanticism undertones, or simply Violent Neoclassical. They are often classed as a metal act due to the fact that in their earlier days, they were signed to a label that released metal music almost exclusively. In actuality, though their sound has sometimes been very violent, they have never been metal of any form.

In an interview with a French magazine posted in June 2007 on their website, Iskander Hasnawi indicated that the costs and difficulties of recording the orchestral music associated with Elend have made it impossible to continue with the Elend project. Both composers will be continuing with personal projects, including L’Ensemble Orphique.

I feared they might defile their music with English lyrics as I read the track's title "A World in Their Screams". No other language could replace French here. Its very monotone and "flowing" nature is a perfect match for this music. As someone said below, the music is unique. Good luck for your personal projects Elend. Malheur, malheur aux hommes de bien, car ils seront les esclaves d'esclaves. Leur corps tombera le premier et leur nom sera calomnié. - A timeless observation.

The_Remorseless: You probably won't get consistent answers to that, asking for a few of their more beautiful tracks is like asking someone to pick out a couple of the greenest blades of grass in a meadow.

Wake of the Angel; Worn Out With Dreams; Under War-Broken Trees; Plain Masks of Daylight: their tracks of melancholy are so beautiful. Anybody know of any more?

It's just impossible to describe all the power of their music using words.....They are not like "the best" or "the most favorite". They are just unique!

They made something different from any neoclassical darkwave I've ever heard. I'm not in the position to say who's the best and who's not, but beyond this, their originality and talent make them a really great band.

A World in Their Screams is without a doubt the most terrific piece I've ever heard, and since 2 years one of my all time favourite album. I'm so fucking sad it's their last album... Someone knows about a solo project or a new project ? It would be more than welcome.

In my opinion, they were even superior to Dead Can Dance, but of course all my respect for the primeval ones.

Sunwar the Dead and Winds Devouring Men remind me a lot of Dead Can Dance, like LibreLibre said. This band is amazing. It's sad that they are not more popular. À découvrir impérativement !

Try The Umbersun. Their latest three albums are different, but perfect in their ways, too. Personally I mostly like "Les Ténèbres Du Dehors" and "Sunwar The Dead" ;-)

Guys, I listened to "Weeping Nights", "Leçons De Ténèbres" and "Les Ténèbres Du Dehors". Any other album worth listening to ? Please leave me a shout, as I don't visit the profile much. Thanks :D

The other Elend albums, on the other hand, are such an unique masterpiece of contemporary classical music. Giacinto Scelsi would be proud. :)

Yes, it is. "Winds Devouring Men" and "Sunwar the Dead" are pretty similar, although more violent than DCD. For example, "The Host of Seraphim", "Enigma of the Absolute", "Tell Me About The Forest (You Once Called Home)", "Ascension", "Xavier" etc are the songs of the same darkwave style as "Chaomphalos", "Threnos", "Poisonous Eye", "The Newborn Sailor", "Silent Slumber: A God That Breeds Pestilence", and even "Moon of Amber".
