28 Jan 2008, 17:57 by Eclectic-GFurther to my journal of September 24, 2007, the January 26, 2008 edition of Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper, once again under the title "This week in history", ran a copy of the CHUM Radio Top-10 charts for Saturday, January 28, 1978: 30 years ago.
Here is the list:
1 You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) (Rod Stewart)
2 Turn To Stone (Electric Light Orchestra)
3 Slip Slidin' Away (Paul Simon)
4 Here You Come Again (Dolly Parton)
5 Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel)
6 Blue Bayou (Linda Ronstadt)
7 Desiree (Neil Diamond)
8 Come Sail Away (Styx)
9 Baby Come Back (Player)
10 Short People (Randy Newman)
This week was "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)"'s 15th week on the chart, and its fourth and last week at number 1. As for "Short People", this was its first and only appearance on the Top-10. It spent a total of 15 weeks on the CHUM charts, the only time that Newman appeared there.
5 Jul 2007, 23:55 by riffloverIf loving these cheesey tunes is so wrong, I don't want to be right!
12:51 - The Strokes
Most people cried 'Sophmore Jinx!' when the Strokes' second album came out. But that didn't make this highlight any less delightful.
Brand New Key - Melanie
I know this is a song some people love to hate, but to me, if it were a slice of cheese it would be a cute little wedge of Vache Qui Rit! Mmmm.
Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder
Last time I checked, this song was not yet cool enough to be classified as new wave. Whatever.
Bus Stop - The Hollies
Forget Rhianna, this umbrella tune is gear!
Can't Change Me - Chris Cornell
I've just read the review of some critic who has a grudge against Chris Cornell for inspiring all these nu-grunge poseurs. I don't like those twits either, but Cornell had some real melodic gems during Soundgarden and his first solo album, like this one for instance.
Car Wash - Rose Royce
Come on all and sing it! The perfect summer tune.
Don't Ask Me Why - Billy Joel
5 Apr 2007, 02:45 by triviawiz425I've been hearing a lot from friends lately - not even members of Last! - that my top ten artists is a combination of has-beens, stupid old groups and dead guys. It is time someone came to their defense, so welcome to:
Why My Top 10 Artists Don't Suck
Starting with number 10, working to 1.
10. John Denver. Perhaps one of the most well thought, articulate guitar plucking folksy-country-pop-rock artists of the 70s, or any era for that matter, John Denver constructed some of the deepest, most influential songs of our era dealing with non-lovey, gooey topics (heck, even the ones that do aren't bad...), and was so popular for a time that he even had his own variety TV show. How can you not respect someone like that?
9. Eagles. Bar none, the most commercially successful artists of the 1970s - they still hold the title of performing the United States' most purchased album - Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 . This one probably needs the least explanation of any of the artists on this list…
