The band started as a trio with Andrés on the drums, but then decided to go for a drumless format, which prompted them to rearrange their songs in electronic versions in which they explored the rhythmic possibilities of concrete, everyday sounds. Their music contains samples like someone biting an apple, objects being smashed against the floor, porn movies, books’ pages turning, several kinds of white noise, balloons running out of air being scratched, and TV’s turning on –all of this within a psychedelic pop context of surreal lyrics or instruments deformed by multiple layers of delay.
ego; experiments with the manipulation of noise, the re-contextualization of familiar sounds into awkward environments, the construction and decomposition of rhythm, the incorporation of concrete sounds into traditional harmonies, lo-fi aesthetics, and –more globally– the stretching of catchy pop tunes in attempts to transform them into conceptual experiments.
Their live shows are characterized by the live looping of rhythms, and sudden contrasts between playfulness and seriousness, and the juxtaposition of radically different musical genres.
After the underground release of the self-titled EP in 2008, ego; is currently developing an LP, through online collaboration, that will carry the conceptual elements further.
