“Where Is My Man” was one of the most requested dance songs in the mid 80’s at Backstreet Atlanta, a one- of-a-kind gathering place for the very diverse group that filled it’s 3 floors to capacity every weekend for over 25 years. Eartha Kitt was loved by everyone that frequented this 24/7/365 nightspot. She performed live there in 1984, debuting this song, after being carried onstage by 4 gorgeous hunks while reclining on a chaise. She also sang “Champagne Taste On a Beer Budget”, a track that was to become the B-side of the 12 inch dance single featuring “I Need a Man”. She was extremely popular with the Backstreet elite who began arriving 8 or more hours early to claim a spot on the dance floor near the stage located on the far side of the room, opposite the lower bar. Miss Kitt’s performance that night was flawless, as were her breathtaking gowns that dazzled the eyes with thousands of faceted beads and sequins. She looked like the goddess she was, truly loved by all. The dance single was one of the best sellers of the time and she has been paid homage too many times to count by the entertainers at Charlie Brown’s Cabaret, then at Backstreet, by their performance of this most popular and well-loved song. Capacity crowds were a given every Friday evening til the wee hours of Monday morning, but a live performance like this magical, once-in-a-lifetime wonder led to literally overflowing crowds of fans on the 2 floors above the dance floor, with people trailing out the upstairs door - clinging to the stair railings - in hopes of hearing her unmistakable and never imitated voice.

I could not have said it better, maliandjane. The producers she worked with understood how to bring the best out of the artists they worked with!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Eartha Kitt, for my first live meeting w/ jazz. A giant at that. I was sth like 10-12 years old when you visited Stockholm. You went to heaven just the other day, but I hope the latter of your 81 years were filled w/ as much happiness as it possibly could. You were more than worth it.
