Olympia, Washington, United States (1990 – present)

There are several artists using the name “Earth”.

1) The most well-known Earth is an band formed in 1990 in Olympia, Washington, United States by Dylan Carlson, Slim Moon, and Greg Babior. They are pioneers in the minimalistic and repetitive form of known as , but considerably changed their style over time, today playing what one might consider a distinct kind of instrumental . The band at some point moved to Seattle where Carlson forged a strong friendship with music icon Kurt Cobain, who sang lead vocals for the song Divine and Bright on the live album Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Cobain also appeared as a “specialist” on Earth’s 1990 debut release Extra-Capsular Extraction, and sang backing vocals on A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge Part 2. Joe Preston, who played bass briefly with the Melvins, also appears on this 3 song CD.

Dylan Carlson has been the driving force of the band and still remains the core of an everchanging line-up. As of the release of their most recent album (entitled The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull), Earth consists of Dylan Carlson (guitars/amplifiers), Adrienne Davis (drums/percussion), Steve Moore (acoustic and electric pianos/wurlitzer) and Karl Blau (acoustic/electric bass). Bill Frisell appeared as a guest guitarist on three songs.
Earth’s official website is www.thronesanddominions.com

2) Earth was also an band from Melbourne. They are rarely active as they don’t play live, except on occasion as part of international tours. They were well known in the Melbourne Metal scene and played many times at Metal For The Brain (a long-running annual Australian Heavy Metal festival held in Canberra, which ended its run in 2006).

I hate this band because they're so fucking awesome that it makes me realize what a pile of shit I am by comparison.

I still think their best stuff is distorted. Angels of Darkness pt. 1 is awesome for driving around at night. Pt. 2 is great for grading papers and lesson planning.

I have a love/hate thing with this band. I've been listening to them consistently for about 2 years but every time I listen to something that isn't Earth, I think it's too fast. I think I just hate that other bands aren't Earth.

Check out my band. Five piece noise/experimental/ambient band, none of us know each other in real life, only over the internet. We make music, and we're cool. http://www.last.fm/music/H%C3%A1v%C3%A6r+Ebak%C3%B5la+Kaiyou

I like their western sound. I hear it, but I think it sounds totally fine. It's just their style right now.

Well, you are talking rubbish about sounding the same. The only time I've ever felt they've sounded "Western" was during Hex and Hibernaculum, I really don't hear any of that influence in AOD,DOL 2, let alone in the first. I just don't get how you can say "They've been stuck in this "Western" thing a little too long." My only bother, but whatever.

I'm not getting in a Last.fm debate, but one last comment to Riffdissonance- saying I don't "actually listen to the band" because I hold a different opinion than you is idiotic. Just saying.
